How I work

A flexible and pragmatic approach to counselling, guided by evidence-based training.

Collaborative, pragmatic, and led by what fits you.

I'm Max, a BACP registered counsellor completing a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. I work with adults who often appear to be coping well on the outside, but are dealing with anxiety, low mood, or a sense of being stuck.

I'm trained in several approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy, person-centred therapy, and psychodynamic therapy. That means I can draw on a range of methods and shape the work around you, while keeping the relationship between us at the centre. The aim is a calm, collaborative space to understand what's been going on and move forward with a clearer sense of direction.

01

No fixed model

Different people are helped by different things. We find what fits you, rather than fitting you to a method.

02

Structured or exploratory

Sometimes that's practical work with the patterns that keep showing up. Sometimes it's slower and more reflective. Often it's a mix.

03

No pressure to commit

No contracts, no obligation to continue. You take things at your own pace and step away whenever feels right.

You don't have to figure it out on your own.

What I work with

Things that often go unchecked.

Alongside anxiety, low mood, grief, and life transitions, much of my work is with the patterns that don't always look like a problem from the outside.

01High-functioning anxietyCoping on the surface but feeling drained and overwhelmed underneath.
02Loss of directionA lack of motivation, or not knowing what you want from life.
03Men's mental healthFor those used to handling things alone, and carrying more than they let on.
04Perfectionism & self-criticismRelentless inner standards, never feeling good enough.
05People pleasingPutting others first at the cost of your own needs, often struggling to set boundaries in work or relationships.
06Emotional avoidanceKeeping difficult feelings at arm's length until they build up.
Client testimonials

Counselling with Max has been a lot more relaxed than I expected. I never felt rushed, even with a lot on my mind, and things slowly started to feel less overwhelming.

Client, online therapy

I'll be honest, I wasn't sure about therapy. I thought it would force me into being uncomfortable, breaking down and all that. It wasn't like that. We just talked, and I worked things out in my own way.

Client, online therapy

Some weeks we worked practically, other weeks we just talked things through. You seemed to read what I needed each time.

Client, online therapy

I came to you unsure what I even wanted from therapy. Over time, we explored what was causing the sense of unease I'd been feeling, and I didn't realise how impactful that would be.

Client, online therapy

You helped me notice patterns I'd never really stopped to look at before.

Client, online therapy

It always felt more like a conversation than something clinical, and that made it easier to be honest with you.

Client, online therapy

Nothing was ever forced. You let me take what was useful and leave the rest, at my own pace.

Something less formal

Coffee and a chat with Max

A free 30-minute informal listening space for anyone who'd value a moment to pause and talk through what's on their mind. Held after hours at a calm local café in Richmond, in a relaxed, non-therapeutic setting.

About

There's no single right way to do this, so we find yours.

A flexible approach

Therapy with me starts from an important principle: there's no single right way to do this. I'm trained in several modalities, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), person-centred therapy, and psychodynamic therapy, which means I'm able to work pluralistically.

In practice, that comes from the understanding that no one method works for everyone. Different people are helped by different things, and much of the work is finding what fits you, rather than fitting you to a method.

Your first consultation

Usually the first step is an initial consultation. It's a chance to talk about what's been going on for you, what you might be hoping to get from therapy, and how you'd like to approach things. It's also a chance to get a feel for whether working together seems right.

There's no obligation attached to it, and if it doesn't feel like a fit, that's completely okay.

The work itself

I draw on a range of established, evidence-based approaches rather than working from a single fixed model. For some people that means something more structured and practical, working with the patterns and habits that keep showing up. For others it means something more relational and exploratory, taking time to understand what sits beneath the surface.

Often it's a mix, and it can change as we go. What stays constant, whatever the approach, is a sense of empathy and understanding running through the work.

Non-contractual

There's no pressure to commit. An initial consultation doesn't oblige you to book anything further, and if you do continue, you can stay in therapy for as long as it feels useful.

There are no contracts or expectations to commit beyond what you want, and you're free to take things at your own pace, or to step away whenever feels right.

Where sessions are held

Sessions are currently held online, using a secure, encrypted video platform. I'm in the process of securing an office space, and will offer in-person sessions once that's in place.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about the therapeutic process, online sessions, and what to expect from our first meeting.

This is a 30-minute informal space for us to meet online. We'll talk about what brings you to therapy now and what you're hoping for, and I'll explain how I work. It's an opportunity for you to ask questions and see if we feel like the right fit.
Standard individual sessions are 50 minutes long. This is known as the 'therapeutic hour', which allows time for grounding at the start and space to transition back to your day at the end.
Research shows that online therapy is highly effective for many people. It offers greater accessibility and lets you attend from a space where you feel safe and comfortable. I use a secure, encrypted video platform to protect your privacy.
I have a 48-hour cancellation policy. This allows me to offer the space to someone else who may be waiting. Cancellations made with less than 48 hours' notice are usually charged at the full session rate.
The length of therapy is entirely individual. Some people come for short-term focal work (6–12 sessions), while others prefer longer-term, open-ended support. We review our work regularly to make sure you feel you're getting what you need.
